As far as links go I like to judge by what I see and I don't really see a strong correlation with the amount and quality of links and a top 3 position. Either my software isn't accurate in picking all the links up or the value of links depends on the niche and the level of competition.
There hasn’t been direct correlation for years. It doesn’t mean anything. Established sites that have accumulated more link equity to pass to internal pages don’t need direct links to those internal pages to rank. This is why your article may rank without backlinks.
